Cambodia Gambling Dens
There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from next door Thailand, in which casino gaming is illegal. Eight gambling dens are based in a generally small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect destination, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing income acquired from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a few controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; still, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are apparently required to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most borders.
The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship casino, highlights one hundred and fifty slots and sixty table games. The Naga gambling hall is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel complex that contains numerous amenities on top of the gambling den, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 table games.
